The Aspenson meat processing tradition began when Ron began working in the meat business at the meat locker in Richland Center in 1958. In 1960 he was hired at the Kroger Supermarket in Richland Center, and in 1962 he was transferred to Mauston and became the manager of the meat department. When the Kroger Company left Wisconsin in 1971, Ron and Rosanne purchased the Westby Locker and moved their family of six children to Westby. At first the business was run with the help of Ron’s sister and brother-in-law, but they later left the business.
Although all of the Aspenson children have helped out at the locker at one time or another, Ron and Rosanne’s son Rod has worked there full-time since the fall of 1979. The business was initially focused on butchering and custom meat processing, but in the 1980’s it expanded to sell more fresh and frozen retail meats. The selection of homemade sausages was also expanded. Today hundreds of homemade sausages and fresh cut meats are prepared on site daily.
Unfortunately, Ron passed away in April of 2005 after a brief battle with cancer. Rosanne and Rod have continued to run the business and have won numerous state and national awards on their sausage products. After years of hard work and dedication, the Aspenson meat tradition still continues.
